An excerpt from Monty Sholund's devotional book, "MONTY'S MUSINGS ON 'My Utmost for His Highest'"

In this excerpt, Monty is musing on Oswald Chambers' My Utmost devotional for March 22nd, entitled "The Burning Heart."

THE BURNING HEART

Hello, my friend. Our reading for today in My Utmost is from Luke 24:32, words spoken by those disciples on the road to Emmaus who had invited Christ to share a meal with them. And we read, When He was at the table, He took the bread and gave thanks for it, broke it and began to give it to them. Amazing, the guest became the host. Then, vs. 31, Their eyes were opened and they recognized Him, and He disappeared from their sight. Im sure it was His nail-pierced hands as He took the bread which opened their eyes. They saw and knew the Lord. And then we read our reading for today, Were not our hearts burning while He talked with us...and opened the Scriptures to us. Exactly. As we walk in fellowship with Him, and He opens up the Scriptures to us, suddenly we experience a blessed heart-burn, which cannot be denied.

There are other passions which cause our hearts to flame, and we must watch them. As Chambers says so helpfully, The only test we should use to determine whether or not to allow a particular emotion to run its course in our lives is to examine what the final outcome of that emotion will be. If the outcome is something that God would condemn, then I must put a stop to it immediately. On the other hand, if it is a Spirit-kindled emotion, then I must lovingly, thankfully express it by praising God and by sharing with others. After all, an impression without expression often leads to depression.

When the Spirit of God speaks to us, whether in Bible study, or conversations, or in worship, or in listening to the preaching of the Word, then we must make as many of our decisions irrevocable, letting the consequences be what they will. We must constantly affirm, not our plans which can be so deceitful, but our dwelling in the presence of the Lord, the only calling which is forever blessed.

Thank You, Lord, for this undeniable sense of knowing our hearts burning when we sincerely meditate on Your Word and eagerly share it with another. Give us a passion which brings You alone the glory.
