BIBLE TRIVIA CHALLENGE
(Scroll to the bottom for the latest Trivia question.)

I have always enjoyed playing Trivial Pursuit. It can be both a rewarding and a frustrating challenge. But I alwyas learn something new each time I play.

The answer to each trivia question is found somewhere within the Bible.  When you have found the correct answer, please e-mail it to me at: MaxPrincipal@aol.com.  Or you can write the answer on a card and mail it to me at our office location.  A winner will be chosen from among those with the correct answer and will receive a $25 gift card to either a restaurant or book store.  The correct answer will be revealed in the next issue of the Philogian and here on our website.

February 2007- Question 1
Many women are mentioned by name in the Bible.  But, for only one woman does the Bible reveal her age at the time of her death.  Can you name that woman?
Answer:
Sarah. Sarah died at the age of 127 – found in Genesis 23:1.

There were 33 correct answers submitted.  The winner of the $25 gift card is: Susan Anderson from Shoreview, MN.  Congratulations, Sue!  And, congratulations to all those who submitted the correct response.

May 2007- Question 2
What Old Testament general was covered by a blanket so that his body would not deter the advancement of his troops?  Please give the reference.
Answer: General Amasa, who was murdered by Joab and whose body was pulled to the side of the roadway and covered with a blanket so that the advancing troops would not stop to stare.  This story is found in 2 Samuel 20:12.

Our second question proved to me a more difficult one.  We had eight readers respond with an answer – but only six had the correct answer.  The winner of the $25 gift card is: Jennifer Moore from Hutchinson, MN.  Congratulations, Jennifer.

August 2007- Question 3
The prophet Ezekiel is told that even if three well-known Old Testament leaders were present in Israel, they could not stay the hand of God’s judgment – they could only save themselves.  Who were these three Old Testament leaders and what is the reference?

Answer: Noah, Daniel and Job. The answer is found in Ezekiel 14, verses 14 and 20.  I was asked to comment about the significance of these three names.  In the Old Testament each person was responsible for acting on behalf of someone else to provide for their deliverance: Noah – delivered his own family from the flood (Genesis 7:1); Daniel – delivered his friends from certain death (Daniel 2:17-18); and Job – delivered his friends from the wrath of God (Job 42:7-9).  This text in Ezekiel 14 would indicate that the sinful conditions in Jerusalem were so severe that even, if Noah, Job, and Daniel were together, their requests could only result in their own deliverance, not of anyone else.

Our third question proved to be a easier than I had thought it would be.  We had eighteen readers respond with the correct answer. The winner of the $25 gift card is: Beverly Sorenson from Annandale, MN.  Congratulations, Beverly.

November 2007- Question 4
Who was the Roman Emperor when Jesus was born?  Who was the Roman Emperor during the years of His ministry?  Give Scripture references.

Answer: Caesar Augustus and Tiberius caesar. The final question for 2007 proved to be more difficult that I thought, as only eight people submitted the correct answer.  Caesar Augustus was the Roman Emperor when Jesus was born (Luke 2:1), and Tiberius Caesar was the Roman Emperor during the years of Jesus’ ministry (Luke 3:1).  The winner of the $25 gift card is: Lannie Cragg from Minnetonka, MN.  Congratulations, Lannie.

February 2008- Question 5
Sometimes don’t you find it hard to get up in the morning, especially when the snow is falling and the winds are blowing?  It would be so much easier to just stay in bed.  And, if we had a bed like one of the kings of old, we could almost get lost in our bed.  The first trivia question for 2008 is this: Identify which person in the Bible had the largest bed.  It truly was a king-sized bed.  And give the Scripture reference.  (Hint: This is an Old Testament pagan king).  Enjoy the challenge.

Answer: King Og of Bashan had a bed thirteen feet long and six feet wide, made of iron.  The reference is Deuteronomy 3:11.  The first question for 2008 proved to be much easier than I thought.  Sixteen people submitted the correct answer.  You might remember the question:  The winner of the $25 gift card is: Al Sorenson who lives in Boone, Iowa.  I believe he is our first out-of-state winner.  So, congratulations, Al.

May 2008- Question 6
Name two Egyptians who opposed Moses when he requested Pharaoh to let the people of Israel go into the wilderness to worship the Lord.  (Hint: Pharaoh is not one of the two).  Give Scripture reference.

Answer: Jannes and Jambres. According to 2 Timothy 3:8, Jannes and Jambres were magicians in the court of Pharaoh who opposed Moses.  The winner of the $25 gift card is:  Dennis Prothero from Brooklyn Park, MN.  Our congratulations to Dennis.

This question, like the last, seemed to be an easy challenge for many, although only ten people submitted the correct answer.  (Personally I had nearly a dozen others who spoke to me in person and shared the correct answer).

August 2008- Question 7
When was the first deliberate cremation done in the Bible and who was cremated?  Give Scripture reference. (Hint: these were not cases where a person committed suicide by setting a building on fire around him.  No, I am looking for a person or persons whose bodies were deliberately burned following their deaths).

This question was submitted to me by my son-in-law.  I can tell you it had me stumped, but the answer is in one of the Old Testament books.

Happy searching!

Have fun with the challenge!  You will learn something new in the process.
